LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Greetings NACDEP colleagues
The themes for this quarter's newsletter are Galaxy and the Western Region.  We have a lot of information in here that you are going to want to examine carefully - items about awards, tours, registration, links to web sites, and a lot more.  Note that we have two separate updates from the Western Region - one from Mark Apel and the other from Betsy Newman.  There are some very interesting things going on out there that I know you are going to want to read about.   I also liked the title of one of the submissions from Michael Dougherty about the "March to Galaxy" since this is the March newsletter and I have always been a fan of puns.  Plus Michael has provided us with a lot of useful details.  Happy reading!

Convention Center LEED Plaque
Pittsburgh is a cool site for our September conference.  The convention center is architecturally impressive, full of green building features and wrapped in glass which allows wonderful views of the river in one direction and cityscape in the other direction.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

On May 1st, I will have the distinct pleasure of handing over the gavel to President-elect Michael Darger as he becomes the President of our Association. I will do so knowing that I have done my best to lead and serve our Association. And, as I say goodbye to close friends that are leaving the Board, I am looking forward to greeting our new officers and settling in as the NACDEP Past President. Thank you to the departing Board and Committee members, NACDEP has greatly appreciated your service. To the incoming Board members...Welcome! The bar has been set high by your predecessors. Get ready to roll up your sleeves!

Organizations, and the people who lead them, are often faced with difficult decisions and situations. I have had my fair share over the last year. Oftentimes, you are faced with moving forward or...

Board RetreatThe work done to update our policies and procedures during the board retreat, as well as conference scouting, should pay off big time in the short run (awesome NACDEP at Galaxy Conference in 2013) and longer term too (Policies & Procedures).  I also learned that getting around the city's rivers, highways, hills, and one-ways is much easier with the aid of three of your NACDEP pals!

THE MARCH TO GALAXY

Galaxy Logo

March may be known for its madness, but it is also the month you should be beginning your preparations for the Galaxy IV Conference, to be held September 16-20 in Pittsburgh.

The earlier travel plans are set the better.  About 2,000 Extension Educators are expected to attend the conference.  So you have to be ready for when reduced, early bird registration ($450) opens May 1, 2013.

Between now and then, you can research the main Galaxy hotels:  the Omni William Penn
(NAE4-HA headquarters), the Marriott City Center (NACAA headquarters), the Renaissance Pittsburgh Hotel (NEAFCS headquarters), the Double Tree (ANREP headquarters), and the Wyndham Grand Pittsburgh (NACDEP and ESP headquarters). You can learn about the David L. Lawrence Convention Center, a LEED Platinum Certified building and the location for the main and concurrent sessions (as well as many meetings) during Galaxy. And you can find out why Pittsburgh is found at the top of many lists of places to visit or live in the United States.

Hotel reservations will be PART OF conference registration. Room rates will be approximately $179.00 + taxes & fees for the Wyndham Grand Pittsburgh. TO ENSURE YOU RECEIVE THE BLOCK RATE, PLEASE DO NOT CALL THE HOTEL DIRECTLY, YOU MUST RESERVE THROUGH THE CONFERENCE SITE.

And be sure to visit the just opened Galaxy website:

Clemente I had forgotten how pumped up I feel when I get the opportunity to interact and work with with others who are passionate about community development. My brain is exploding with ideas of what NACDEP can do to ensure community development survives in this era of tight budgets within Extension.

I can't wait for Galaxy where I hope to be surrounded by at least 200 NACDEP members for a whole week!

Stacey McCullough, Southern Region Rep

PNC Park I left our planning meetings with the Pirates and the Steelers regarding Community and Economic Development so excited and thought to myself,..."they get it"!  I look forward to Galaxy where other NACDEP members will have the opportunity to experience what I did in Pittsburgh.  The built in networking and tours will be worth their weight in gold!

NACDEP REGION SPOTLIGHT:

WEST

Since the focus of this Spring's Newsletter is the Western Region, this is a good opportunity to introduce myself as the new NACDEP Board Western Region Representative starting in May. I would not have had the gumption to even consider this position without the outstanding example set by our outgoing representative Steve Burr. Steve's enthusiasm and dedication to our association over the last several years were an inspiration to me and I would like to thank him personally for his service.

The West, not unlike the other regions of NACDEP, represents its own unique slice of the American pie with regard to community development. That's right; we're 'unique' - just like everyone else.

PNC Park 2 My time spent in Pittsburgh for the NACDEP board retreat was so enlightening! Learning all the work and being surrounded by persons who are so committed to the work of CED professionals gives me enthusiasm to put forth extra efforts to see that NACDEP is a successful professional organizations, providing tremendous opportunities to CED professionals nationwide. Also, working together viewing tour sites for GALAXY really surprised me of what a committed economic development team can accomplish!

FROM YOUR ASSOCIATION MANAGER

Professional Administrative Resources manages thirteen associations that vary from local to regional to national coverage. When working with national clients, face time is always limited, so it was a great pleasure for me to travel to Pittsburgh and spend three days with your Board of Directors. As we worked through revisions in the Policies and Procedures of the organization, one thing became imminently clear - this is a group of passionate, dedicated community development professionals who seek to move this organization forward. During our time together, I had the pleasure of sharing successes during PAR's ongoing partnership with NACDEP.
